INFANT FEEDING & HIV

This has been a challenge for all who seek to promote and protect breastfeeding. Of course Africa is by far the hardest hit but there are signs that a similar crisis could develop in parts of Asia.  IBFAN sees its main role as ensuring that the International Code and WHA Resolutions are well understood and implemented in the face of the risk of HIV transmission through breastfeeding. More independent research needs to be done in this area and mothers must be counselled objectively and given real choices. The Code and Resolutions must have a firm position in regional strategies and national policies. It is only in this way that it can be ensured that infant feeding choices be made without commercial pressure and prevent major “spillover” of artificial feeding and its detrimental consequences, including the erosion of gains made over the past two decades. IBFAN is contributing to the prevention and reduction of Mother to Child Transmission of HIV/AIDS (MTCT) by guiding appropriate actions.

IBFAN Asia Pacific/ Breastfeeding Promotion Network of India (BPNI) and UNICEF ROSA organized “Infant Feeding and HIV: A Regional Colloquium for the Asia Pacific” held on 28-29 November 2003, New Delhi, India.

Rapid assessment of infant feeding and HIV in national PMTCT/PPTCT programmes in 5 countries.

IBFAN groups in Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Indonesia, Malaysia and Nepal conducted the rapid assessment through a participatory process in June 2005.Given below are the reports:
